Headed into 2020, our Panthers had just one senior on the team but that didn’t stop them from finding plenty of success while gaining valuable experience to bring into next winter.
Coach Ryan Rooney said:
“The beginning of the year duals and tournaments serve as a learning experience for many of our inexperienced wrestlers and this year was no exception for Park wrestlers. This year the team opened the season at the
toughest tournament in the country, the Beast of the East.
This was a great test for our athletes as our wrestlers combined for a 7-9 record. That said, we had competitive matches with state and nationally ranked wrestlers which built our confidence out of the gate.
At the Anthony Casselli Invitational, Park was able to crown one champion, the lone Senior, Jon Estivene. Additionally, Freshman Mayson Harms was a runner-up, as we had seven total place winners and placed fourth as a team.
The Panthers also wrestled a competitive dual meet schedule going 10-9 this season. The dual meet season was highlighted by our dual victory at Roselle Park Middle School on Throwback Night as we competed on the stage for the first time since 1963. We were able to upset visiting Somerville by a score of 43-33. Additionally, the team traveled to West Virginia and placed 6th at the prestigious WSAZ tournament in our division, and 16th place overall out of 103 teams with one finalist and two place winners.”
