The road to the individual state wrestling tournament in Atlantic City has begun.
Four Roselle Park wrestlers were crowned District 14 champions Feb. 19 in South Plainfield: Matthew Griffin (106), Mayson Harms (132), Ryan Leiva (138), and John James Ranieri (175) each had their arms raised in the final match.
This foursome will be moving on to the Region 4 tournament at North Hunterdon High School with teammates Angel Mejia (144) and Julian Colon (150), who took second and third place, respectively.

Each of the final matches were wrestled against opponents from South Plainfield, who took home the District 14 title. Roselle Park finished third as a team.
First up was Griffin, who pinned Nicholas Irizarry about a minute into the second period. Then Harms and Leiva went back-to-back. Harms blanked Andrew Loniewski, 7-0, for his second district title, and Leiva bested Daniel Gonzalez-Ross, 6-5. Ranieri provided our last championship with a solid 6-1 decision over Adam Bowles. The only loss RP had in the finals was Mejia’s nail-biting, 2-1 tie-breaker to top-seeded J.J. Giordano.
For third place at 150, Julian Colon flattened Plainfield’s Brandon Bright in 52 seconds.
